    Re: strigi fubar

I recall a bad episode with strigi last year:

    http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3086410.0

However, I just checked all running processes in my "plain vanilla" Kubuntu 8.10 installation here, and strigi daemon is not a running process. So I dunno -- perhaps you now have to choose to install it. OK with me -- I don't need it.

      From wikipedia

      OS support

KDE 4 requires Strigi as core component of the new semantic desktop technologies. KDE has a client program as well as a KIO interface to do queries. Strigi and NEPOMUK are working together to help create a semantic desktop search for KDE. NEPOMUK will allow the user to add metadata, which Strigi will be able to index for a more precise search. Developers are also considering adding Sonnet support to Strigi to allow users to search for documents written in a specific language[4].

GNOME has a Gnome Deskbar applet to search for files using Strigi.[5]

      Sourceforge bug page list

      http://sourceforge.net/tracker/?atid...00&func=browse

30 some bugs. All bugs are assigned to nobody

Strigi is highly integrated into the system. Strigi has very very little documentation. THERE ARE NO man PAGES. Strigi is not the best at fixing their bugs and the maintainers are blindly writing more and more code that is very intricate.

Yeah, I can make sure the daemon never surfaces on my system again. But what about the newbies getting into 8.04 or 8.10 when this demon fills up their /home.

If some of the strigi maintainers wish to post here to address my concerns or the status of backporting that would be lovely.
