PIM for KDE 4 - is it ready yet?

Hi

I'm running 3.5.9 and (to a lesser degree) 4.1. At the moment my diary and contact data is all held within kontact and korganiser for KDE3. These do not seem to be accessible for some reason from KDE 4, nor so it would seem is the .kde directory. Obviously I can access the kde 4 versions from either 3 or 4.

Given the nature of the data, especially the diary, I can't see any sense in anything other than a big bang transfer from 3 to 4 and then uninstalling the old version and the old data (after backing up of course . I have a couple of questions please:

1. Are the KDE4 versions now sufficiently stable for everyday use? If they are, it will certainly encourage me to put 4 to greater use.

2. Are the file structures the same i.e will my data be held in substantially the same place but within the .kde4 directory instead of .kde?

Hi Ian.

I'm in much the same boat - interested in switching but being held back by a few things. While KDE 4.1 is ready for most mundane use, I think there are still a few too many bugs and unimplemented details to move to it for serious work.

On the PIM front specifically, you should be able to import your calendar and to-do list with no real problems. In Korganizer4.1, I think it's a matter of File>Import>Import calendar, and then browsing to .kde/share/apps/korganizer/std.cal, or whereever your calendar is stored. The import works perfectly, as you'd expect (though it will ask you if you want to merge with the 4.1 calendar or save it as a new one, that's up to you, I suspect merging is simplest). Importing means you don't have to worry about losing anything, but it does raise syncing problems if you keep switching between 3.5 and 4.1

The to-do list filters are buggy in 4.1, and won't hide completed or inactive to-dos, which I find very annoying. There's a bug filed, so hopefully that'll be fixed sometime between now and 4.2.

Kmail4 works just as well as 3.5.x, though you'll need to copy over not only your mail (you can import it no problem), but your kmailrc file from .kde/share/config if you want implement the same mail filters (I had more than a dozen, and didn't fancy setting them all back up by hand).

As far as I can tell, the file structures are identical for the 4.1 and 3.5.x versions.

Thanks for the input. Having restored from backup on a number of occasions I thought the import process would be pretty much the same, and I'm pleased that there don't seem to be any show-stopping bugs. I felt it would be nigh on impossible to sync the 2 which is why I can't see anything other than a one-off transfer.

I migrated to the kde4 version but man is it slow, particularly the calendar. Reverted to 3.5.10 which flies by comparison. I'm sure the developers will be working on the bugs and performance issues and I'll upgrade when the KDE 4 version is the default I think.
