Programming Linux/Kubuntu

I'm wondering how do you write code for Linux, is there a compiler or compilers?, which language is used?, by programming I mean creating applications such as Evolution or Kopete, etc.

Just curious, I'd like to port some of my Windows apps to Linux

You have many choices! In what programming language are your windows programs?

Many many development packages and applications available, you will be spoilt for choice.

If it is to be for KDE desktop, have a look into using python or ruby as they have direct support hooks in KDE. Probably the best way is to have a look for yourself. Install kpackage and browse through everything under the Development, Perl, Python headings.

I'll check Python, since I think is more popular.

The language I'm using now is BASIC, using the PowerBASIC compiler and EZGUI to design GUIs and etc.

Is Python an interpreter only or you can also compile your code?

EDIT TO ADD: My preference would be to write code for Kubuntu.

Gosh, I cut my programming teeth on Turbo Basic, now Power Basic. I sent them an email a year ago asking if they would be porting it to Linux. Although encouraging noises were made it would appear there is nothing likely to happen, which is a shame.

There is an allegedly basic compiler for Linux called Gambas. A web search came up with a number of related pages but not the home of gambas so to speak. Best place for details is in the Linux App finder where they have some sensible details of this programme (http://linuxappfinder.com/package/gambas). I can not use it as it is not developed for 64 bit Athlon machines.
