<SOLVED> PDF produced - but where is it?

[running Hardy, on an HP Desktop]

More than anything else, this is a documentation problem, I think. More creeping geekism, and I'm bewildered that things are in the condition I found them.

PROBLEM: I'm in Firefox3, and I want to print a PDF version of a webpage. I do File > Print > ... and at this point what I see is OS dependent, 'cause I see something different in WinXP than in Kubuntu.

So, I select the PDF option in the modal window with which I'm presented.

Next...a long silence. I presume the PDF was created. There were no errors reported. But...where is it? I'm evidently supposed to know something which I clearly do not.

I go looking - in Firefox - for options to specify where it might be put. There are none. I conclude it must be an OS option.

In K-menu > System Settings > Search, I type PDF. Nothing. Not a single entry.

Calling up the Control Center module menu (via Taskbar widget), I repeat the search for "PDF". Nothing. Zip.

And that. folks, is fine documentation. I'm frankly incredulous.

OK...maybe I'm utterly missing something (although I have trouble imagining what). Going to the Kubuntu Forums, searching for "PDF location" I get to "Topic: How-To: Choose Custom Location and Filename with CUPS-PDF" - http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3093200.0

This is gold. The procedure it outlines perfectly meets my need. I'm delighted. But I really don't expect to have to drag the forum to find answers to problems so basic as to where in blazes a PDF generated by system print functions may be found.

NOW...I get genuinely pissy, I'll admit, when I run into overt documentation lapses with Kubuntu, which I use for HOURS every single day of my life. This one alone has cost me about 45 minutes. I like this OS a lot. I do want to help "the cause" when I can. So...

My question: If I want to move this forum-originated documentation - written by someone else (and capable of being rewritten by me, if needed) - into a more user-accessible place (please remember that your average user is NOT accustomed to searching forums for answers to Operating System problems - and likely never will be - a simple fact), what is my next move?

And if I want to file a "documentation bug", what is my best move?

I'm seeking to be advised by those who have a clearer view of the Big Picture than I have yet achieved. (And also save myself some time. I could go searching for the answer, but, believe it or not, I actually sat down to my computer this Friday night to get some work done. I need to get back to work.)

I'm very interested in anyone's thoughts, and will be grateful for any help you can offer, relative to my question.

It's highly likely that it 'failed' but didn't tell you so. Check that the package cups-pdf is installed.

I see your point, had the same feeling
Please check if you have the folder
      /home/<your user here...>/PDF

If you open the File Manager (Dolphin, Konqueror, Krusader, whatever), probably it is opened at your <user> home directory, do you see any PDF folder over there?

Thanks for your comment. I wondered about the same thing, but didn't have the specific package name to go search for.

        I think its on-board:

Weeeeeel. I got it, and theres some PDF files there, including the one I generated but could not find.

Cool. It's NOT cool, however, to fail to document this.

So often I see real cleverness, and good simple direct solutions to problems, in Kubuntu Linux. Closely followed by utter failure to document. To me, that's simply self-defeating, and serves none of us.

So....I repeat that this needs documentation.

Thanks for the information, none the less.

I'm happy it works for you
Anyway, I don't know how much that's Kubuntu. Probably that's more Firefox, than Kubuntu.
Documenting would be minimal, I agree but being honest the best can only be opening a new panel to ask what name and what folder the pdf should take -> than I'll weeeeeel 8)
            What do you think?

Re: PDF produced - but where is it?

Yes, I agree - that's exactly what one gets if one follows the procedure outline at the link I gave earlier. The problem is that one is induced to select "PDF", and then the file is simply generated. If one selects "Print to file" THEN one can select an output location and file name. I simply would never think of selecting "Print to file".

Re: PDF produced - but where is it?

by the way, updatedb gets ol' quickly, etc..and it doesn't auto add any new cache of the new files, etc.. everytime a program, file, folder, etc.. is added and or removed.

if u didn't disable the cron job it should refresh on the next time it's set to run, but to manually refresh the cache do

sudo updatedb before you do locate.

                then run ur search again.

Re: PDF produced - but where is it?

                  Good tip, nowshining.
'locate' is a remarkable tool. Not just it lists files, but it does it fast!
My pc is pretty old, more than 10y :P and when 'updatedb' runs, it's a pain... but that's a small price for the benefit it provides.

tomcloyd, when I was in your position, I knew I could not count on 'locate' then I run
                  Code:
                  find ~ -iname '*.pdf'
That would list all pdf files on my user home folder. Don't know if you're familiar with 'find'

BTW, have you noticed pdf files created on "PDF" are not as optimized in size as the "Print to file" ones?
I compared them on FF 2 and later I just use the "Print to file" option, never tried "PDF" again.
I see no reason for the "PDF" selection. Do you have any comment here? perhaps I'm being simplistic and you change my mind

Re: PDF produced - but where is it?

nowshining - tks for the tip. I was aware of it, and use it from time to time, although even on my relatively fast HP workstation it take a bit of time to do its thing.

walfred - tks also for the "find" tip. I wasn't aware of that one, and will add it to my arsenal. I wonder if using that would be quicker than updating the db? Dont' know.

Well, I think this thread is now at it's end. Thanks to all!

Interesting. Hadn't noticed this. Another reason simply to use the "print to file" option. Thanks for the info.
