background for kdm-kde4 not working kde4

On the last update, the background around the login window is gray. If I choose a menu item, when the menu disappears, I can see that bit of the background. Once I log in, I can see the background in the rectangle where the window was (the splash screen loads on top of the background rectangle which is surrounded by the gray.

The only way I can fix this is by choosing the themed manager. There seems to be only one theme available at this time, and not that I dislike it (yellow daisy in the corner is fine I guess), but it won't focus the password box and I need to click it in order to type my password.

I am not switching back to kdm from kdm-kde4. This should just work.

I understand there was a change that transparency is loaded with kdm-kde4. Transparency works fine on my desktop. Anyway to disable it in kdm-kde4?

It might be "translucency" but I had issues with that and have that unchecked in systemsettings --> appearance. Made the system bog down.

Same problem here. I've got an old Aptiva with a generic S3 (Savage) SVGA graphics card, if that matters.

I loaded the login manager in order to change the kdm-kde4 background to something else BUT...when I open it from System Settings, all the controls in the window (except the tabs across the top) are grayed out and there's no way to use sudo (or "Administrator Mode") to activate them. Does this work?

If someone else figures these out, please post here!
I distrust morning people, largely because I suspect them of getting together early one day while the rest of us were asleep and setting up the rules of civilization.
