    KDE4.0.3 Questions

So... when I read that KDE4.0.3 was out I thought I'd give at a go. Last version I tried (.0.2) was a little rough around the edges (as in fell apart fast) so I wanted to see how it had come along. Basically? Quite good actually. There are some rough edges, visual borkage, and this and that... but with a bit of fiddling it's working nice.

Couple of questions to those in the know...

    1) Still no two-panel support (I know this is in the .1 branch now - anyone know when it's likely to find it's way back to 4.0.x?)
    2) Desktop affects work, but don't switch them on while you have Firefox running or the window will disappear never to come back
    3) Weird one... The system tray doesn't seem to work properly. When applications attempt to add an icon to the tray they quite often appear as windows. The tray is "working" in so far as SCIM/Wallet are in there, but I think these are KDE4 apps... I think it's KDE3 ones that are creating the windows. Even weirder as I think it worked at first.

Any suggestions, ideas, tips etc. much appreciated. Overally, it's looking good.

    Re: KDE4.0.3 Questions

    Interesting --- thanks.

My KDE4 is fully updated, as of this morning -- I guess that means I'm at 4.0.3? Must be.

I have not tried your #1 or #2 maneuvers. #2 looks like fun, I might give that a shot tonight.

On #3, I have at least one non-KDE4 app on the panel -- that would be VMWare Player. Actually I've got Pidgin and some other things there that aren't KDE apps at all. Maybe it is ONLY KDE3 apps that do that?

    Thanks for the report --

      Re: KDE4.0.3 Questions

Little update - I discovered that the kde3-things-in-panels problem only happens after logging out and then logging back in again. It seems something somewhere is getting confused (either previously running processes or something similar). Logout/in also causes problems with Kmail and Kwallet so it looks as though it's not anything specific with particular apps.

Simple solution: don't log in/out ...not a biggie since my only reason for doing it was checking some changes I was trying to make to the KDM. Interestingly another breakage is with "Administrator Mode" in the System Settings panels: the button no longer exists. Trying kdesu kcontrol brings up KDE3 not KDE4's options panel.... I'll need to look around and find if theres a name change here (or perhaps uninstall the KDE3 one if it's a path-order issue).

I've gone the whole hog and removed all the KDE3 apps that have duplicates. I'm getting quite comfy with the new setup.

Irritation with the new menu: I think I've found the "annoying" feature - when you're looking through the programs list for example, even if you have *clicked* on the Applications button at the bottom, this choice does not hold. So if half way through browsing the list you accidentally knock the buttons at the bottom (easy when flying down a list) it switches out again. I think that's about the only irritating thing.... once resized (i.e. nearly fullscreen ) it's quite usable.

Anyone know of a way to make KDE3 apps look like KDE4 (since it's possible to do the same with GTK apps).

I'll see if I notice any more quirks.... but overall very nice.

Ah... one more Flash (or maybe all?) videos don't play nice with Desktop Affects: bit choppy. That is all!
