    H. Heron on a -new- pc...?

In a few days I am getting a completely new PC that has never had an op. system installed. I assume the hard disk will not be formated/partitioned.

Am I right in thinking that the h.herron DVD will do the necessary on starting the install or do I need to use g-parted or similar to at least format the disk first?

The live DVD will do this during the install.

      Yes it should.

I use gparted to set up a separate /home, /data partition because I don't trust installer embeded partitioners.
I set up separate partitions for various reasons one of which is security.

You will just have to choose manual partition at install and choose/make the partitions there.

But on a virgin system you can try it out.

        Kubuntu Computer Geek is correct.

However, personally, I would (and always do) use GParted Live CD to freshly partition and format the new hard drive * before * running the sometimes-confused Live CD installer.

Thanks to various users for all the advice.
When looking at the above I realise that I just don't have the background knowledge to make a lot of sense of this and will probably have to use the automated hardy install system to config. the partitions.

The reason I am getting a new PC and doing this at all is so that I can learn all this stuff. I don't have a lot of knowledge right now to be doing complex Linux related functions.
The best idea would be to go to an install party I guess.
I will probably do the automated setup to get going and then look for an install party to get help to modify/optimise the result.

            Thanx again.

If you go to the gparted documentation site:
              http://gparted.sourceforge.net/documentation.php

you will find plenty of useful info about partitioning.

              Hope that helps.

bthw partitioning is not linux only. One should always have data on a separate partition/disk.

flybye -- that sounds like a plan!
