eSATA (or external) drives and enclosures

I have an internal drive in an enclosure so this drive has the option for eSATA or USB. I'm using the USB function right now. In Mepis, sidux and Debian, I can 'see' it via mounting or it's automatically mounted.

But, for some reason, in Kubuntu, it isn't being detected at all. Even the command 'lsusb' returns nothing identifying the drive. I am wondering if this is normal or if something isn't installed or a setting is causing this problem.

I don't know if I did something that created this situation before booting Kubuntu or if the default is to not detect it. I wouldn't mind if I had to mount it or needed to do something beforehand but I don't even know which device name it has. I found this post but when I tried the suggestion, again, nothing was detected so I am unsure of what to do.

I have three other drives in the computer but they're connected in the traditional way. They're all SATA drives but I doubt they would cause any issue with a device/drive connected via USB.

    Any suggestions?

Re: eSATA (or external) drives and enclosures

Here's my understanding of it, but there is some confusion about all this and some people may agree and some disagree with what I say here. (fyi: I have what you have: eSATA capable external enclosure with a Seagate 320 HDD installed to it; but my Intel board does NOT support eSATA; I set my external enclosure not as eSATA but as USB.)
    >> With eSATA, the drive is hot pluggable, BUT eSATA capability depends on the motherboard as well as the external drive enclosure. Set on USB, you must power down then re-boot the PC for the drive to be detected. What happens if you turn off the PC, connect (to USB and to the power outlet) the external drive and turn on the external drive, then power up the PC and boot into Kubuntu. Is it then detected? Mine works well that way (and I've tested many dual-boot configurations; booting with GRUB to Kubuntu on the external, for example.)
The instructions that came with the external enclosure (Rosewill) are consistent with what I've said here.
