Display Problems When Playing Videos. (kinda fixed)

    Hello.

I'm not really sure if this is a hardware or software problem so I'm sorry if this is the wrong section.

Normally, my monitor works fine, but when I attempt to play any video the entire monitor fades somewhat as if it were using power management, and the video appears overly saturated. This happens wheather I use MPlayer, VLC, Kaffeine, etc. Once the monitor fades out, the only way to get it back to standard brightness (that I know of) is to reboot my laptop.

My videocard is an integrated Intel GM965 (GMA X3100) using the VESA driver. I'm not using Compiz or any other windows effects. Not sure if it's a driver issue, but I couldn't find any X3100 drivers in Adept.

I'm kinda a noob, so I apologize if there's an obvious solution.

    Hi there,

I don't know why your monitor is fading but have you tried fixing the brightness with Power Manager? It's the battery icon next to the clock - there you can see "Mains powered" and "Battery powered" - pull the slide-thingy to the right. Since the shortcuts for adjusting the brightness don't work on my laptop I often resort to doing that. And by the way, I use the same graphics card as you do with no problems.
Try that solution out and let me know how it goes.

    Bye
    I break it, therefore I learn it.<br />

I'd disabled power management for my monitor previously since my laptops rarely unplugged for long, but I gave it a try anyways. No dice. My keyboard brightness adjust buttons also don't work, but I'm not really sure if they ever did since I only tried to watch some movies in the last day or two, and had no need to adjust the brightness until then.

Right after I installed Hardy I tried using the Compiz effects, but it did strange things to my windows decorations, so I disabled it. I've found several posts online mentioning that Compiz can affect video playback with the X3100. If you're using the same card without trouble then it might not be a driver issue, so I may try a fresh install to see if that fixes it, if I can't figure it out in the next fer days.

      Thanks for the help.

Not an ideal solution, but it'll work for now.

        Added

        Option "AccelMethod" "xaa"
        Option "MigrationHeuristic" "greedy"
        Option "ExaNoComposite" "false"

        to xorg.conf and

        INTEL_BATCH="1"

        to /ect/enviroment.

I don't really know what any of them do, but they seemed to fix the video playback. The monitor still fades (except for the playing video) but I can now get it back using power manager (thanks Linuxgirl).
