XMMS won't work

Hi, i installed XMMS yesterday, used it and was very pleased with it. probably the best media player i've used on linux. but for some reason today it won't work. brings up this message every time i try:

Couldn't open audio

Please check that:

Your sound card is configured properly
You have the correct output plugin selected
No other program is blocking the sound card

i'd be grateful if anyone could tell me how to go about checking if any of these are the case, as i'd like to continue using this player
