Can't log in after last nights updates?

This has happened on three of my Kubuntu systems. After last nights updates, when I try to log in, it just ships me back to the log in screen. It does not give me a bad password error. I can log in as root though.

    Any Ideas.

Sorry, just got notes from my users. they can't log in to root as well. They can see the icons loading, but still goes back to the login screen at the end.

Further updates, I can log in by console. Must be an issue with Xserver. I will try to update using console command if I can remember what it is. I'm assuming I am not the only one with this issue, there may be an update fix.

Loged in with console and ran, Sudo apt-get update and sudo apt-get install. No new packages are ready for install or upgrade. Seems some debian people are seeing the same issue. These are our workstations and need to get our Evolutions up and running.

Installed inotify-tools and ran it to log all Xsession.d scripts. It goes all the way to 99X11-common_start. This is the last one that should be on the list in a normal boot up of X11. I'm confused, except if 99X11-common_start is the one failing.

I'm not running Gutsy, and didn't update my HH system yet today, so I dunno what happened.

However, there have been several causes of the infamous "login loop" that you are observing -- if you search on that term you'll find a few posts.

            1. Full filesystem -- this is not your situation (one hopes)

            2. Password file stuck open -- fix by logging in to CLI and executing
            Code:
            sudo shutdown now -r
            3. Broken X server/driver -- various (and multiple) things can be the culprit here. You can start with reinstalling kdm, then reinstalling your video driver, then verifying that your /etc/X11/xorg.conf file is configured correct. I know that's not what you were hoping to do today ..... :P

I haven't looked at Ubuntu Forum today -- if they don't have any problem with yesterday's updates, then that kind of points the finger at KDM.

I have this problem with 4 systems now. These have no nvidia or ati drivers other that the default one found by Kubuntu. I don't think its a driver thing. and don't want to get people making unnecessary changes and creating more problem. Most likely a KDE or Xserver issue. I will have a look over at the Ubuntu Forums, Since they use Gnome. If they seem to be having the same problems, I will assume its a xserver problem. If they are not experienxing our issue, then I will assume it a KDE problem.

I got stuck with similar results on three computers, although I have no clue if the reasons are at all the same. I solved the problem after much trial and error by removing some additional language packs I'd installed. I use both English and French but after the recent updates, got stuck in this login loop.

                The packages I removed were

                language-pack-en-base
                and
                language-pack-kde-en-base

I still have English when I log in to KDE though. I've taken no time to figure out why this was happening, so sorry if this post isn't very enlightening. :-)

Try booting into Recovery mode, choose the root mode CLI, and when you are at the CLI run
                  Code:
                  dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
Choose whatever makes best sense for your keyboards. When the script dumps you back to the CLI, enter

                  Code:
                  /etc/init.d/kdm start
and see if you get back to your desktop. It worked this morning on my Hardy Heron / KDE 4 system, which was also borked by the updates.

Re: Can't log in after last nights updates? (solved)

Seems to be an issue with KDE Language pack.

This command should resolve you login problems.

                    sudo apt-get install language-pack-kde-en=1:7.10+20071120 language-pack-kde-en-base=1:7.10+20071012

You will need to press cntrl+alt+F2 to drop to console mode. You don't need the sudo if you log in as root.

When done, reboot, you should be able to log in.

I got Shivers and nightmares just thinking about re-installing FGLRX on one of my systems, but did not as my three other systems had the basic installition drivers and were affected as well.

Be carefull after your system is running as you will most likely be notified that there are updated for these Language packs. Ignore them for a while. The next language pack might resolve this and you could update again. if not keep this fix handy.

reggler: I think there is a typo in blkmax's solution, this worked for me

                        sudo apt-get install language-pack-kde-en=1:7.10+20071012 language-pack-kde-en-base=1:7.10+20071012

Same error here...but as mentioned by PithPossum, due to a typo.

                          Myself, I did:
                          sudo aptitude remove language-pack-kde-en language-pack-kde-en-base
...which worked for me...at least as a workaround.

Obviously there is something wrong with these 2 packages...

Nice to find this thread. Looks like an extremely serious but common problem. The original thread is a couple weeks old but this just happened to me today. Got some language pack updates and now I am getting a loop on boot of kde.

The updates yesterday were to language packs so that is probably the issue. I will try your suggestions to remove or use older versions and see what happens.

Hooray I'm in! Removing the language packs fixed the problem and I am back to my desktop.

This is a very serious bug. How de we report it?
