    Problem with emerald [SOLVED]

    Hi there.

I 'm an old linux user (more than 6 years) but new to (k)ubuntu. I 'm now using Kubuntu Gusty in my home PC (Intel QuadCore2, 4 GB RAM, 2x500 GB SATA II, NVIDIA 8600 GT with 512 MB). All are working fine, except the emerald.

I have follow several tutorials and guides for compiz fusion with emerald and I can start compiz fusion successfully, but the emerald ALWAYS displays the same error and failed to start:

    Code:
    emerald --replace

    (emerald:27405): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed

    Checking for Xgl: not present.
    Starting emerald

    (emerald:26629): GLib-GObject-CRITICAL **: g_object_ref: assertion `G_IS_OBJECT (object)' failed
/usr/bin/compiz.real (video) - Warn: No 8 bit GLX pixmap format, disabling YV12 image format
I tried with several versions of the NVIDIA drivers (trying the envy utility) with the same result. Now I'm using the 100.14.19 drivers (that are provided from the restricted driver manager).

    Here is my latest xorg.conf:
    Code:

Please help me, because as I can see to the forums, there are a lot of users with the same card and Kubuntu Gusty and are working fine.

There is probably a problem on my configuration, but I can not find it ....

    Re: Problem with emerald

Have you done searches for Dibl's Nvidia How To's? Very well documented.

      Re: Problem with emerald

That driver should work fine on that card, although there is a newer one now.

Here's how it works with my 8800GTS (skip to Step 3):

Do you have glx working correctly? That's a necessary precedent to having the Emerald window decorator working. Open your Konsole and enter
      Code:
      glxgears
If glx is working you'll get the graphic and a fps calculation.

It looks like you have more options than needed in your xorg.conf file. Compare yours to the one in my writeup, and I think you can lose a few lines.

Yep, and once I looked at it I realized it is a little outdated -- Envy now has the latest Nvidia driver included, so I had some editing to do. :P

            glxgears is running OK.

I have already try the latest Nvidia driver 169.09, with envy utility, without success.

I followed the forum http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=601310 for the installation of the required packages.

            No luck. Other ideas ?

PS: I tried to find more info on google for the emerald's error without luck ...

What does "without success" mean, exactly?

I'm starting to wonder whether your Nvidia driver is really installed fully or not. For example, if you open Kmenu>System>Nvidia Settings, and click on the GL Information and GLX menu items, what does it show?

"without success" means that emerald produce the same error.

Thanks for the help, but I found that the problem is somewhere in my settings. When I created a new user to the system, emerald is running smoothly !!!

I'll find out the setting that produce the problem and I'll update the post here ...

Ahhhhh -- that's a new one on me!

You might try emptying the hidden .kde folder in your /home/user directory, then restarting the x server with Ctrl-Alt-Backspace and logging back in. All you KDE settings will be re-written there automatically as you use the apps. Just a thought -- there must be something in your user settings that is interfering with Emerald/Compiz.

A word of warning, deleting ~/.kde may result in loosing important data like emails and contact information (kmail saves mails in there by default, for example). If you're not sure, it's better to rename the folder (or back it up)...so you can undo the change.

                      Re: Problem with emerald

I am admittedly lazy and reverted to kwin, but isn't it a good idea to try aquamarine instead of emerald? Aquamarine = kde friendly and emerald = gnomeish so kubuntu and aquamarine should be made for each other?

I Aquamarine even still updated? I thought it disappeared with Beryl...

Anyway, I recommend "compiz-kde", and running "kde-window-decorator --replace"
                        The answers are out there...

Correct, "kde-window-decorator" is the decorator that replaced Aquamarine.

The above goes to show that it is a couple of months since the last time I fiddled with anything outside of Kwin
anyway my basic assumption that it might be the wrong decorator to mess with in the first place was still worth about a quarter or so, wasn't it? :P
