Re: How to know whether my sound card is detected or not
If you want to know if it was 'detected' open a console and type:
Code:lshw

Re: How to know whether my sound card is detected or not
Look at the multimedia section. In the first section it points out at some audio device(may be default intel audio controller) and in the second multimedia section it shows creative card. But which one is in use intels default audio card or creative sound card(which is of my interest). ??

Re: How to know whether my sound card is detected or not
The problem is looking at us square in the face by what your lshw shows in the *-mulitmedia sections. First occurrence:
*-multimedia
description: Audio device
product: SB450 HDA Audio
vendor: ATI Technologies Inc
physical id: 14.2
bus info: pci@0000:00:14.2
version: 01
width: 64 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=HDA Intel latency=64 module=snd_hda_intel
*-multimedia
description: Multimedia audio controller
product: [SB Live! Value] EMU10k1X
vendor: Creative Labs <<<<<<<<< This is your Sound Blaster controler
physical id: 4
bus info: pci@0000:02:04.0
version: 00
width: 32 bits
clock: 33MHz
capabilities: bus_master cap_list
configuration: driver=EMU10K1X latency=64 maxlatency=20 mingnt=2 module=snd_emu10k1x[/b]
The second item, identified as Creative Labs would be a card that you added to the PC. Does this sound correct? Assuming both to be true, you have an active onboard sound chip that is conflicting with a second installed sound card. Again, assuming the first is an onboard chip, then you need to go into your BIOS and disable the onboard audio/sound.
Something to note, is that the Sound Blaster card is a 32-bit audio controller, and you have a 64-bit CPU.Windows no longer obstructs my view.

Re: How to know whether my sound card is detected or not
still interested in sudo lsmod|grep snd though...
did he actually mention there was a conflict? I assume so, too, but it wasn't stated explicitly.Once your problem is solved please mark the topic of the first post as SOLVED so others know and can benefit from your experience! / FAQ

Re: How to know whether my sound card is detected or not
Not sure a driver is available for your 32-bit SB card. A Google search found this:
Good news for owners of Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi series as manufacturer’s binary Linux drivers are available for free downloading. The driver is compatible with ALSA. Bad news: it’s available only for x86_64 Linux.
Here is the list of supported cards:
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Elite Pro
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Platinum
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi Fatal1ty
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeGamer
Creative Sound Blaster X-Fi XtremeMusicWindows no longer obstructs my view.
