    Problem with samba's update?

I don't see any other mention of this, so I may be the only one it's happened to. But the Adept updater informed me this morning that I had updates waiting; I got some of them downloaded but then Updater shut down with a message "There was an error committing changes. Possibly there was a problem downloading some packages or the commit would break packages". It's been like that all day so maybe it's not that a download site is down?

The packages it won't download/update are samba and samba-related. I downloaded/installed samba some 3 days ago and everything went well AFIK. Is there a problem with samba's update?

Open up Konsole and try these commands:
      Code:
      sudo apt-get update
      sudo apt-get install
      sudo dpkg --configure -a
Incidentally, the upgrade went fine for me. (I upgraded with apt-get, though.)

I let the Adept Notifier do it, and there were no problems with it.

Same issue here. Here's the ouptut from the command line after Adept coughed up the error:

            Re: Problem with samba's update?

Ok, I think this could be a repository problem. I navigated out to http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu/pool/main/s/samba/ in Firefox and tried clicking on the three package names smbclient_3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb, samba-common_3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb, & libsmbclient_3.0.26a-1ubuntu2.1_amd64.deb and I get a 403 Forbidden. Same story it appears on the i386 packages. Trying to use wget also yields the same results.

Here are the relevant lines from my /etc/apt/sources.list :

            Code:
            deb [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] gutsy-security main restricted
            deb-src [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] gutsy-security main restricted
            deb [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] gutsy-security universe
            deb-src [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] gutsy-security universe
            deb [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] gutsy-security multiverse
            deb-src [url]http://security.ubuntu.com/ubuntu[/url] gutsy-security multiverse
For those of you that did have this work, do you have a different url listed in your sources.list for security updates?

Well I guess that answers it! Not a big deal for me, but it is a tad annoying having the adept updater continue to notify me that an update is available which can't be installed.

Is there some way to reset Adept Updater so that accusatory red triangle with the "!" in it won't stare at me until the update thingee is fixed? It's looking at me from two machines and it rattles my nerves ^_^. I could turn it off but then I wouldn't know when to turn it back on again.

                    Re: Problem with samba's update?

At least they stopped the broken package from getting out. I'd rather have this situation and wait than get a broken package like I did when I first started Kubuntu. One week into my new install and my first upgrade I lost X windows because of a bad package. Since then, I haven't had any problems with updates at all and that has been well over a year.

Right Click on the Icon and select quit. You should see a message "Do you want to start Adept Notifier next time you log in?" Select start and the icon will be gone until you log in again.

                        Re: Problem with samba's update?

okay, I must have just hit this at the wrong time because the packages downloaded for me but then adept gave an error "Unable to commit changes" etc and bombed.

Now the adept notifier is not telling me there are updates pending - even when I know they are.

How do I verify that adept notifier is running (and re-enable if not), plus if adept "thinks" that the update was successful - how can I correct this.

                        Many thanks,

I had the same problem last night, broken packages, etc., so i tried Synaptic and it said "none to upgrade", this morning Adept is still whinging about the three packages, and Synaptic still says none....

It's apparently fixed as of about 3:30 pm CST. I got the new samba and related downloads with no problems that the updater knew about.

According to Community Announcements & News on the Ubuntu Forum, the problem reported yesterday is still not fixed. I also received updates to some samba files via Adept Notifier today. None were the base Samba package however, and I believe that it was this file that was pulled yesterday. The other released updates processed in Adept without mishap (I checked them with apt-get install -simulate packagename first just to be on the safe side).
