Installin vmware server in Kubuntu Gutsy

I am a new bee with linux, initially installed ubuntu, but after being advised by friends moved on to Kubuntu. Installation was no problem but finding programs, search is a problem! some one told me you can download vmware server and install and virtually run xp till you become familiar with kubuntu.

I downloaded the latest vm server from site, now the problem is installation! can some one help me get it installed by a perfect how to considering I am a foreigner to the linux commands!

I find the commands, okay but when I type the commands in kansole it says no files found, how to navigate to files and do the installation.

Please some one help me out!

Re: Installin vmware server in Kubuntu Gutsy

First of all welcome to the gang
Well there are a few ways to go about this.

Basically you have to open a terminal in the file you extracted (unziped in winspeak) your vmserver to and then run
    Code:
    sudo ./vmware-install.pl
    and accept all the defaults.

    first I would read this:
    http://ubuntu-tutorials.com/2007/09/...on-ubuntu-710/

As you can see you have to install a patch as well. This is because gutsy comes with a later kernel than the one vmserver likes. So this might be a bit tricky at first.

    then read this:
    http://www.howtoforge.com/vmware_con..._windows_linux
if you have a stable windows install this is a lot easier

Then download vmware player and install that:
    http://www.vmware.com/download/player/
It is installed the same way as the server (see first link) except that it plays windows a lot faster

When you want to "play" a windows "guest" you simply start vmplayer and point it to the location of your virtual windows file.

I hope this helps a bit. If you have any questions feel free to ask
