Kubuntu 7.10 trouble with boot ; Notebook Samsung R60 Plus

    Hi,

I have troubles with booting Kubuntu 7.10.
After Grub text menu boot simply stop and do not even start. All I have is welcoming screen with Kubuntu slide bar waiting to start.
If I press ctrl+alt+1 many times the booting procedure goes somehow through.

    dmesg shows following errors:
22.203755] PCI: Using ACPI for IRQ routing
[ 22.203757] PCI: If a device doesn't work, try "pci=routeirq". If it helps,

but then I think that main reason is somewhere in the hard drive:

It is notebook Samsung R60plus (preloaded with MS Vista) and I think that some driver for the hard drive is not compatibile with it.
I did installed Atheros hardware Access Layer and ATI driver for the non-free driver support.

You are way over my head (i.e., you know more than I do here about this!).
I would just note that one often gets that error when there's problems setting up the initrd (initial RAMdisk).
In your boot menu, /boot/grub/menu.lst, in the kernel line, the trouble starts after the "root=" part and/or in finding/installing the RAM disk to get things started in the boot process. What you say here is consistent with this. (I've seen SATA driver issues come into play here in some cases.)

Without using the Live CD, you can't access this (the Kubuntu boot entry) so here it is:
    title Ubuntu 7.10, kernel 2.6.22-14-generic
    root (hd1,4)
kernel /boot/vmlinuz-2.6.22-14-generic root=UUID=cbd79e1b-6095-49ca-9b42-4cfca49b899c ro quiet splash
    initrd /boot/initrd.img-2.6.22-14-generic

(This knowledge won't help you solve the problem, though.)

Did you try the Live CD -- does it boot and function? If the Live CD will run, connect to Internet, etc., then it seems the problem is within the hardware that Live CD does not use, like the hard drive and hard drive controller and maybe some parts of BIOS.

      This one would scare me.

        Hi,

Is the solution to install Kubuntu form the Alternate CD?
I have installed this from normal kubuntu-7.10-desktop-i386.iso

What is a role of Alternate CD in term of benefit in such cases?

See if there's anything here that applies to your situation:

I'm not sure whether the Alternate installer would help here. Of course, I haven't researched your problem, so I'm not sure about anything.

Herman summarizes the Alternate advantages as (direct quote):

With the 'Alternate' Install CD, you can,

            * choose between GRUB and LILO boot loaders, or even install with no boot loader at all,
            * specify exactly where you want the IPL for the boot loader installed,
            * create pre-configured OEM systems,
            * set up automated deployments,
            * upgrade an older installation without network access,
            * install ubuntu as a server, (without any 'GUI' (desktop)),
            * set up Ubuntu with LVM or software RAID,
            * perform an 'expert' install (for coping with machines with difficult hardware),
            * the 'Alternate' CD's partitioner will work in a computer with 128 mb of memory and maybe less.
            * plus a few more neat little tricks.

I use it sometimes for the first two reasons (bootloader install & where), but even then, you can do that with the Live CD installer ("Manual" plus Step 6--the Advanced button is where you put GRUB).
