    How convert Ubuntu into Kubuntu?

    Hi,

By mistake I installed Ubuntu 7.10 on my desktop (with XP- doubleboot) instead of Kubuntu. I have Kubuntu 7.10 on my laptop and prefer it.

Any suggestions on how to transform Ubuntu into Kubuntu? Reinstall?

    Hi

i don't know the exact name, but there should be something like a kubuntu meta package in synaptic manager (Administration menu).

maybe after the installation, there is a mixture of menu entries.

if you haven't changed to much yet, maybe a reinstall will be the best solution.

    cheers

Yes there is -- the name is
      Code:
      kubuntu-desktop
that's the one you want to install.

G'day, fullkoll. Forgive me if I have dumbed this too far down.

The absolute easiest way is to:

        Open konsole (click Kmenu>System>konsole)

Type (or copy and paste) the following

        sudo apt-get kubuntu-desktop

When it asks, type in your password.

Answer any impertinent questions it may ask.

And you should be good to go when it's all finished.

        Hope this helps

I just have a question about that. I did the same thing, and the truth is that I am not too fun of Gnome. I installed KDE on my gutsy OS and I am happy with it. can delete the gnome window manager and stay with KDE without any problem? Your answer would be appreciated.

Your login manager should allow you to go into KDE or Gnome. It always tells you something like "KDE last session" I think. Just go with that. At least until someone can give you a real answer. :P

Thanks a lot, but I was talking about if I could uninstall gnome instead of keeping it. would that destroy the distro? I install ubuntu instead of kubuntu but I would like to uninstall gnome. Do you think I could do that without any damage?

Re: How convert Ubuntu into Kubuntu?

I hope someone better qualified than me answers this. I have had Gnome like you, pookito, and didn't like it. When I tried to look for a way to remove it, it broke all sorts of things (firefox being one). The only way I eventually fixed it was to do a new install, after creating a separate /home partition, which I can not stress enough is SO important. I would suggest, if you for some reason can't do a reinstall, then just put up with it. It doesn't take up all that much room on your hard drive (or does it?).
I know this is not that helpful, but it's the way I did things and it worked for me. :P

Thanks for all your tips and suggestions !

I now have KDE up and running BUT....... my windows where "damaged" (no frames and other strange things) when I started Compiz.

Any suggestions anyone? I solved it by purging all the Compiz files

But some of the effects would be nice to have .............
                  I have a GeForce 8600 GT card.

Did you install the Emerald themes? I think that is what you need for the window borders. Perhaps reinstall compiz and emerald? It works nice on mine, even with a photo of me and my brother on the side of the cube. :P

I will have to agree with Lowey, once you install your themes you should be good to go.
