GUI Madness

Hi all,
I find my self requiring help! I have a dual boot system Windows XP/Gutsy Gibbon Kubuntu 7.10 and when I now boot into Kubuntu ,the login screen appears,I enter my username and password and the next screen is vertical lines of the colour spectrum.Being a newbie this has me stumped. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

I also have this trouble but it didn't appear until I upgrade to Kubuntu 8.04. I enter my login details and hit enter, then instead of getting the neat graphics for the loading screen its just a box of messed up graphics with wording below it as to what its loading.
