Kubuntu+TS-H493A (Samsung)=your computer may not work ever anymore?

    Hello.

First, I'm a noob to Kubuntu/Ubuntu. I installed it because I'm *SICK* of Windows Vista (I have a Dell -- the last one I'll ever buy). I think Kubuntu/Ubuntu is fantastic. Every day, I find something cool about it.

Using GNOME, I had problems with my DVD player playing DVDs. Once I made the move up to Kubuntu, this problem went away and I was very happy. But then something odd happened. I could load a few CDs and play files from them, but after about 5 CDs, very all of a sudden, the screen would freeze, the computer itself would make a low-pitched long tone. Then the screen would go black. Then the computer would (should be saying "will") make a series of equally spaced beeps.

I thought I knew my way around the PC pretty well, so I basically pulled the plug then pulled all the other plug and re-connected them, then restored the power and pressed power-on. The same beeps came on again. I though Kubuntu damaged my motherboard. I pulled the power again and replaced it and the same thing happened again. Finally I got really upset and picked up the computer and threw it onto my granite floor (from 2 feet high). When I pressed power, it came on perfectly. Weird, huh?

Anyway, this same thing happened again the next day. Needless to say, I just can't use the CD/DVD drive at all under Kubuntu/KDE. It doesn't give this particular problem under Ubuntu/GNOME (it just won't play DVDs there) and shockingly it works perfect in Vista. It's a Samsung TS-H493A. Has anyone else had this problem or is this just a rare freak-out?

    Thanks for the help.

Is this a laptop model? The symptoms sound like it could be overheating -- it may or may not have anything to do with playing CDs. Can you let it run Firefox or a video stream or something for the same length of time (5 CDs), and see if it shuts down under that condition also?

      Either overheating or bad memory.
For overheating, just do anything that'll create heat. Play games, watch videos, anything CPU-intensive--but stay away from CDs/DVDs, just to make sure it isn't only the drive. If it continues to happen, you'll know this is the problem.
As for memory: if you boot into Grub, there should be a "memtest86+" option. Start that and let it run for a few (like 8-10) hours. That'll test memory.

I think it's overheating. My PC at work (HP) was making the same kinds of beeps whenever i try to log on and the IT guys said it was the power supply on it's last legs. He solved the problem by giving me a brand new desktop .

Usually beeping coming from the motherboard means something. If you look up the specs' for the motherboard in your laptop, you may find out exactly what it means.
It works sort of like morse code, but it's completely dependent on the motherboard you have.

It could be anything from CPU or Memory trouble, to a simple issue like Overheating.

It's a desktop. I thought it could be overheating, but given the time I keep the computer operating, I figured that I didn't have it on long enough.

The first time it did that, I was running Firefox. I think the second time it was just running Kaffeine or Movie Player. I may work up the nerve to try again.

Firefox is known to be somewhat resource-intensive, as is playing video.

If you're afraid of doing damage to your computer, I don't think that it's getting dangerously hot, just over the "comfortable" temperature.
Hmm... You could try looking in your BIOS to see if it has a temperature alarm setting...
