Getting a Canon PIXMA MP530 to work

I've got a Canon PIXMA MP530 that I need to get working with my AMD 64-bit machine. I've previously followed some instructions I found at http://rosemaryroad.org/computer_log.html that got the printer working on my 32-bit machines, but the drivers it uses are the wrong architecture for the 64-bit machine.

I've looked at and tried the instructions on the OpenPrinting Database web site, which instructed me to install Gutenprint. I did so and all seemed to go well - no errors, but also no entry in the device list for the MP 500 series printers either. So, I decided to try copying the PPD file from one of my 32-bit machines into the /usr/share/cups/model folder on the 64-bit machine. After restarting CUPS, I was able to successfully add the printer, but still nothing works. Jobs sit in the queue with an error indication and never make it to the printer.

Can anyone give me some pointers on how to get this thing to work without resorting to buying TurboPrint? It seems like I'm close, but I just don't know where to go from here.

    Thanks.
    Bill Lugg
