No sound - except amarok

Another newbie question

For some reason I can't get anything to make any sound. Except for amarok.

Amarok plays perfectly, but nothing else will make a sound - including testing the sound on the system settings/sound system/general/test sound

It's an Intel onboard soundcard configured with ALSA on Kubuntu Feisty.

Please help.

I'll assume it's the Intel HDA system, same as mine.

Install the following packages:

alsa-base
alsa-utils
alsa-oss
alsamixergui
alsaplayer-alsa
alsaplayer-common

Then open your Kmixer (the speaker icon at the lower left) and play with the channel controls. On the "Output" tab, make sure "Front" is not muted.

Yes HDA rings a bell

first 4 packages already installed, last 2 installed with no change to problem. All channels on and at maximum volume - still no sound on "test sound" or Youtube.

Is there a keyboard sound volume control? Hit "+" a couple of times. Do you see a volume indicator on the screen when you do that?

yes 100% and can be changed. amarok volume changes accordingly
