In Konqueror, it looks like my default application for unknown extensions or file type is Java web start. How can I change this? It even tries to open .txt file with that. The default option of Kate would be much better. Thanks for your help.

Try to look into:
Konqueror -> Settings -> Configure Konqueror -> File Associations and search for "txt"

I'm havening (lol) a similar problem, only it's opening files in Audacity.
I checked the konq associations, didn't find anything out of the ordinary.Comment
