    No administrator button for kdmtheme

Um, okay, I think i am kinda smart sometimes... but when I go to System Settings, Appearance, and then finally KDM Theme Manager, there is a note that I need to click an administrator button that DOES NOT EXIST. I tried kdesu kdmtheme.

I eventually ran kdesu sustemsettings... and that seemed to do the trick:-)

OK, I have no reason to think I'm smart, but I can't follow you -- where in "Appearance" did you find KDM Theme Manager? My choices are "Colors", "TT fonts", "Font Installer", "Icons", "Style", "Window Decorations", and "GTK Styles and Fonts", and I don't see KDM-anything under those items.

You can install it in apt
        apt-cache search kdm-themes
kde-kdm-themes - Themes for the K Display Manager

I then noticed there was no administrative button so I ran "kdesu kcontrol" and under System Administration, KDM Theme Manager I installed the new theme.

'kde-kdm-themes' is a package that consists of additional kdm themes.
The package for the kcontrol theme module is 'kdmtheme'

I normally do sudo kcontrol. i think that gives me administrative rights to everything right

you also run the risk of messing up your ICEauthority (X related stuff). better use

                Code:
                kdesu kcontrol
                or

                Code:
                kdesu systemsettings
