    installing gnome

    would I be able to install gnome to have all of the apps that it comes with, but not use it. I prefer strongly prefer KDE over gnome

    You can sudo aptitude install ubuntu-desktop to get everything. Or, just install the apps you want. If you download the whole thing your menus will become very cluttered. However, when you log in you will be able to choose Gnome or KDE.
