DHCP and Gateway problem

I installed Festy Fawn by cd and connected to a LAN. I expected the integrated LAN card got a ip address by DHCP. But it didn't happen. The card was recognized by the system, but it didn't take an address. I tried to put a ip address by ifconfig eth0 address up. By this the card has an address but internet don't works because I can't give it the ip of gateway. I try to set on the control panel, but seems impossible to hold that settings. How can I do?

Can you give the specs of your machine?
Especially what type of network card you are using?

This will definitely help us understand what is wrong.

The machine is a Dell Optiflex 330 which has a network card Bradcom 57xx integrated on board.
