I've tried the ndiswrapper directions in the ubuntu wiki, I've tried the directions here, and I am at my wit's end. I've had no problems getting wireless to work via ndiswrapper in other distros and previous versions of kubuntu, all on other laptops. But this laptop is kicking my butt.
It's an Acer Aspire 5050-3785, with "Built-in Acer InviLink high-speed wireless LAN with Acer SignalUp technology (802.11b/g); Fast Ethernet LAN; V.92 modem" that belarc under windows IDs as Atheros. Atheros what, I'm not sure, cos the belarc file is on an ntfs drive I also can't get working. A quick google suggests it's likely an atheros ar5bxb63. If anyone knows how to get this working, I'd be very greatful, cos if I don't have wireless working by tomorrow morning, I'll have to swap my windows drive back into the laptop before class, and I REALLY don't want to do that!
Edit-Fixed, using the instructions here http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=512828 and wicd.
