    Going from Ubuntu to Kubuntu

    Hi.

I have ubuntu installed on my laptop and would like to install Kubuntu. How simple is this? And would any files and programs i have installed be lost, or could i just install and everything be as it was before except that i have a better looking desktop!?

    thanks.

Re: Going from Ubuntu to Kubuntu

There's a meta-package called "kubuntu-desktop" that is purported to bring all the KDE stuff in at a single installation. I haven't done it myself -- fair warning. Let us know how it works.

      And from FAQ
      http://www.kubuntu.org/faq.php

I already have Ubuntu installed, how can I get Kubuntu?
      1. Install kubuntu-desktop either with Synaptic or the command line apt-get install.

See InstallingKDE for a full explanation.
      InstallingKDE
      https://help.ubuntu.com/community/InstallingKDE
      The options are as follows:

      (i) kubuntu-desktop -- This is the recommended metapackage to install; the full Kubuntu installation, with all the Kubuntu recommended packages. This includes OpenOffice, Kontact, Konversation, amaroK, K3B, and others.

(ii) kde -- This will install the following KDE packages: kde-amusements, kdeaccessibility, kdeaddons, kdeadmin, kdeartwork, kdegraphics, kdemultimedia, kdenetwork, kdepim, kdesdk, kdeutils, kdewebdev, kdevelop3 and the kde-core metapackage (see details below).

(iii) kde-core --- This will install the core -- the bare-minimum required-- of KDE. That is, kdebase, kdelibs, arts and fontconfig.

I haven't tried this (kde in the Ubuntu) but tried Ubuntu-desktop to the Kubuntu.

      MAybe this helps:
      K Menu Gnome
      http://www.kde-apps.org/content/show...?content=31025
      Description:
K Menu with Gnome folder and extra icons for KDE 3.2 or later.

If you install both KDE and Gnome then K Menu will become a mess with overpopulated submenus. Some distributions try to solve this by hiding many Gnome apps in KDE and most KDE apps in Gnome. I do not like that. I want to access Gnome apps in KDE and KDE apps in Gnome. So this is my attempt to both maintain desktop interoperability and unmess the menus.
      Before you edit, BACKUP !

Re: Going from Ubuntu to Kubuntu

Thank you for your replies. Will try installing the kde desktop with the install command. After reading the articles I am still a little unsure as to what this will do. Will it basically wrap a skin around my existing ubuntu package, or will it totally install over the top thus removing all programs associated with gnome ubuntu and replacing them with kde kubuntu programs?

I am a little apprehensive about the installation as my laptop is used for work, and i am not knowledged enough to reinstall all programs that are required for my analysis.

        Thanks.

Re: Going from Ubuntu to Kubuntu

I have done this in Dapper, and there was no problem at all. I didn't do it in Feisty. When logging in I got could choose between Gnome and KDE.
Nothing was lost, and as I remember well even all systemsettings were the same. (Of course not colours of windows and other things belonging to Gnome/KDE.)

No, kde installs separately with its own apps. Gnome apps remain and you can choose which ones you want to keep. On login you choose which session you want to use. As well, you can (have to) choose which login manager you prefer (KDM=KDE/GDM=Gnome).

            I hope this helps.

Re: Going from Ubuntu to Kubuntu

If I remember correctly when using synaptic or adept you will have to open the terminal window to see the changes being applied. It will then ask you which login manager to use. If you don't it will seem to hang but it's waiting for a reply from you. If you use the terminal you will of course not have this issue.

Warning- Your menus will be very cluttered if you install one DE over another.
