install problems: k-9mmv, geforce6800, amd64 windsor 2400

hey,

i'm a linux n00b and i tried installing the latest versions of both Kubuntu and Ubuntu, but I cannot run the live version of either in normal mode. If I run Kubuntu in safe graphics mode, I can get it loaded, but when I try installing I have zero luck. It scans for partitions and the dialog box remains blanks.

Ubuntu makes crazy patterns across my screen in either safe or normal. Ctrl alt del doesn't restart them when the screen gets all messed up, i have to do it manually from the case.

i've tried both the amd64 live disc and the i386 alternative disc, using the text installer for the latter. i get the same problem. i was hoping that using the i386 would prove that maybe the default drivers for my video card would be more stable, but i just get a black screen when trying to load with some little red streaks up at the top.
