    segmentation error upon boot

I just installed feisty fawn to a dell latitude. The install went ok following some initial problems, but now when I try to boot to the hard drive it stops. Grub goes through fine, then i get:

    starting up...
    loading, please wait...
    segmentation fault

The seg fault continues for a while, then i get

check root= bootarg cat /proc/cmdline or missing modules, devices: cat /proc/modules ls /dev

    and then

ALERT! /dev/disk/by-uuid/56918a50-8a59-4251-86a7-545c3f39c815 does not exist. Dr opping to a shell!

    BusyBox v1.1.3 built-in shell (ash)

/bin/sh: can't access tty; job control turned off

then I get a command line starting with (initramfs).

I'm a newbie, so this is very troubling. Please help!
