    can't load gui

after upgrading all my internals on my computer, i can't get the gui. it loads kubuntu then the screen goes black with a blinking cursor in the upper left corner. If i hit ALT + F2 i can log into the console. but i can't get the gui. i don't want to reinstall because i have important files on the hard disk
