    Ugh...

I've tried installing both Ubuntu and Kubuntu, both of which would only install to my hard drive through the alternative CD. Now, my problem is it will not boot to the GUI interface. The last few lines are simply this:

    Loading ACPI modules...
    Starting ACPI services...
    Killed.

I don't understand why this distro is doing this, when the Mandriva 2007 Spring that was previously installed on this same desktop machine is causing these problems. The machine is custom built, anyway. The CDs I used on each attempt were the 64 bit variety. Relevant specs are Athlon 64 3500+, ASUS ECX1600XT (ATI) video card, 1 GB RAM, and finally ECS KN1 Lite Extreme motherboard(uses nvidia chipset). Any help would be MUCH appreciated.

From the grub menu, try booting in recovery mode. What error messages do you get?

Does (re-)booting with acpi=off make any difference?
