    Kubuntu 7 install fails

    Hi all,
I am trying to install kubuntu 7 (or 6).
    I d'led the dvd for kubuntu 7.
When I start install I want to do manual partitioning.
I have Gentoo Linux on sda3 and sdb1,Win XP on sda1 and sda2.
    Those work quite well.
So I set aside a partitition for Kubuntu sda4 ~160GB formatted as ext3.
Kubuntu says it has "an incompatible feature enabled".
I checked sda4 with e2fsck cfdisk and there is nothing wrong with it.
On sdb1 I have Gentoo Linux which I don't want to loose!!
But Kubuntu wants to grab it.
Can anyone here explain what is going on?
PS In desperation I d'led Kubuntu 6 and tried that.
It starts formatting sda4 and when finished it says something about sda3.
Well I don't want to loose sda3 since it has the Gentoo /boot files on it.
Then when I hit "go back" it simply quits.
    So far no nice experience.
I have been using linux for years and had nasty experiences with
different distro's so you become cautious.

Ad hoc, I'd suggest to manually prepare the harddisk in question as follows: reformat /dev/sda4 to an extended partition, (to be) containing Kubuntu on /dev/sda5 and it's swap on /dev/sda6 (or vice versa ...).

      Hi Unicornrider,
      Thanks for the answer.
When I started I had the following table:
      /dev/sda1 Win-XP
      /devsda2 Win-XP files
      /dev/sda3 /boot (Gentoo)
      /dev/sda4 extended
      /dev/sda5 swap (5GB)
      /dev/sda6 Linux 100MB
      /dev/sda7 Linux ext3
      /dev/sdb1 (/ gentoo)whole disk.
I wanted to install kubuntu on sda7 with sda5 as swap.
That was when I got this message.
I reasoned that kubuntu maybe doesn't like extended so
I deleted partition 4 through 7 and made it one primary partition.
      Alas the problem persisted.

Hmmm, time for "Plan B": use the Alternate CD for "core system" and your DVD for additional off-line installation.

No offense intended, Pietje, but unless you are competing for the "Most Unused Swap Space Ever Created" prize, you could safely cut that back to 1.5GB, and it is still unlikely to be used much. UnicornRider gives good advice

            I concur and agree.

            Why have two swaps?
Kubuntu doesn't have anything against extended partitions and using the alternate cd can only help.

              Re: Kubuntu 7 install fails

              Hi all,
I have 4GB ram. Most howto's say that swap should be twice
the ram.I thought that would be a bit overdone so I choose 5GB.
However I knew from using "top" during compiles that the swap
was rarely used.I am now running Gentoo without swap altogether
              and it runs fine.
My reason for trying (k)ubuntu was a post about ntfs programs
where ntfs config was mentioned. This seems to be an ubuntu
program not available in other ditro's.
I need good communication between winxp and Linux because
of the printer/scanner combo I have:
Epson Stylus Photo RX560.The printer is well supported by the
latest Gutenprint 5.1.2 but the scanner is not.So I use winxp
and gimp-for-windows to scan and transfer the scans to Linux
with ntfs-3g.Setting this all up is not easy for me and I was hoping
kubuntu (or ubuntu) would make things easier.
Thanks for all the answers.I think I'll stick with Gentoo.

Me too. I think the swap "how tos" are from the days of 33 MHz CPUs and 128 MB RAM. :P
