The command to exit xserver is Alt+Ctrl+Backspace

Then you select the 9755 driver and install.

    sudo startx brings you back.

I have had issues 5 times in last week with new kernel upgrades.

At prompt, if you hit the up arrow, it takes you back through the last lines entered.

Up Up UP to cd ~/Desktop/Downloads

Up Up UP to the sudo sh NVIDIA-Linux-x86-1.0-9755-pkg1.run

In a few mins it is giving the finished screen and NVIDIA on startx is a sign it went fine.

Folks, don't panic over the command line. It is not THAT painful. Beryl and Google Earth are incredibule installs on Feisty!

      Yep.

Actually, Ctrl-Alt-Backspace doesn't really exit the xserver, it restarts it. To truly shut it down, Kubuntu users need to do a Ctrl-Alt-F1 and then log in at that prompt, and then type
      Code:
      sudo /etc/init.d/kdm stop
      to really shut it down.

Then startx from the CLI starts it up again.

By the way, Ctrl-Alt-F1 is the first of about 6 CLI terminals that you have, Ctrl-Alt-F2 being the second, and so on up to Ctrl-Alt-F6. I'm not sure about F7 -- guess I'll have to try it.

Well I'm going to try an upgrade from 6.10 to 7.04 with Adapt. I am running 8776 nvidia on my FX 5200 should I switch to VESA before I try the upgrade?

I was facing a similar problem with my MSI motherboard which includes a Geforce4 onboard chipset. When I installed the Nvidia driver using Automatix it could not start the xserver. I tried rolling my own using the download off the Nvidia webpage. I know from running the Nvidia install that this chipset need the legacy driver. Still no luck.

After reading this thread I noticed that Fiesty includes the Nvidia driver. This lead me to ask why should be installing the driver if Fiesty included it. I uninstalled the drivers that I was working with, and set it back to vesa using dpkg-reconfigure. Now I have my install back to working, but poor quality video. I used the System Setting in the K Menu to set the video to Generic GeForce4 with the correct monitor, then rebooted. Success. Now I have better resolution than I did with the real Nvidia drivers with Edgy.

Yes I'm thinking the key if using Nvidia is set your video to "nv" generic NVidia driver or VESA then restart X. Once that's working upgrade then install the corect Nvidia with glx etc for the kernel you get with the upgrade from the repositories.

Next question does the upgrade changes your repositories list to Fiesty or must you do it manually?

            Thanks

Well upgrading over the net was a bust > it screw up grub and I had to install from the cd. Upgrading distros should be eayser then reinstall everything from the cd everytime.
