Laptop goes stadby in 20 sec intervals

I've just installed Feisty Herd 3 from livecd. It worked just fine with cd-only, but after i installed it to HD it started. Like i clockwork laptop goes to standby after about 20 seconds. It doesn't happen in console, but right after graphics have loaded -> standby. And after it has resumed from standby, after ~20 seconds it goes standby again. Even if i don't touch anything. It's kind of annoying

Any suggestions?

Laptop is old Dell L400.

This sounds like another version of "over-motivated power management" to me - as discussed in analogy in this thread (?).
