accessing USB harddrive slows down system

hi i just installed kubuntu feisty yersterday, everything works as it should, but i have a strange problem. i have 320gb external harddrive. whenever i copy something from or to it, i get decent speed(around 20mb/s) but whole system is unresponsive till copying is over. is there anything i can do with it? my system is intel core2 duo, primary disk is sata on via mainboard. if there's any other info connected to this i should post please let me know.
