Cannot get nvidia driver working with Xorg

When I try to use the nvidia driver, I did apt-get install nvidia-glx nvidia-glx-dev like was said in the wiki and tried to use it both with the /etc/X11/xorg.conf from KControl > Display > Hardware > Config > Proprietry and the xorg.conf generated by nvidia-xconfig.
    The xorg.conf from nvidia-xconfig reads,
    Code:
    # nvidia-xconfig: X configuration file generated by nvidia-xconfig
    # nvidia-xconfig: version 1.0 (buildmeister@builder3) Mon May 15 13:23:42 PDT 2006

    # /etc/X11/xorg.conf (xorg X Window System server configuration file)
    #
    # This file was generated by dexconf, the Debian X Configuration tool, using
    # values from the debconf database.
    #
    # Edit this file with caution, and see the /etc/X11/xorg.conf manual page.
    # (Type "man /etc/X11/xorg.conf" at the shell prompt.)
    #
    # This file is automatically updated on xserver-xorg package upgrades *only*
    # if it has not been modified since the last upgrade of the xserver-xorg
    # package.
    #
    # If you have edited this file but would like it to be automatically updated
    # again, run the following command:
    # sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

Which I haven't changed since installation.
The card is an nVidia Geforce 6200 w/ TV-OUT [...]
The problem is that when the boot/init finishes X just shows a blank black screen, I've had it before but I can't remember how I fixed it.

    Have you run

    $ sudo nvidia-glx-config enable

    ?

Re: Cannot get nvidia driver working with Xorg

Yes, I have done that. It generated this error,
Error: your X configuration has been altered.
This script cannot proceed automatically. If you believe that this
not correct, you can update the md5sum entry executing the following
      command:
      md5sum /etc/X11/xorg.conf | sudo tee /var/lib/x11/xorg.conf.md5sum
otherwise edit manually /etc/X11/xorg.conf to change the Driver section
      from nv to nvidia.

I did what it said and it ran fine without errors but still the same black frozen screen

Weird. It seems from this line that your video card has not been fully detected. or is that a normal nVidia entry?
Identifier "NVIDIA Corporation NV40? [Unknown nVidia Card]"
Which wiki did you use? I followed this thread and was able to install my NVIDIA GeForce MX 4000 successfully: http://doc.gwos.org/index.php/Latest_Nvidia_Dapper

I'm not sure, but maybe you need the linux-restricted-modules installed as well?

Yeah, I thought that Identifier line was odd as well, I had installed the linux-restricted-modules-2.6.15-*** for my kernel.

go to this site and follow the instructions, it works for both kubutu and ubuntu.
it is a great little program, it not only installs the nvidia drivers but also all the video codecs and plugins you need.

I tried that, it did nothing at all, it didn't even touch xorg.conf
edit: i think that it i a problem with the x server seeing the main screen as the unconfiged tv-out and therefore not showing anything on it.
This is really weird and irritating as I have had the nvidia driver working in Kubuntu Dapper before and I've no idea what is different this time.

I'm not absolutely sure if this will help. Try to run sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg. Backup your xorg.conf just in case.

That didn't work either, just returning me to the splash instead of X.

Have you or have you not installed the linux-restricted-modules package for your kernel? If not do it NOW. Then, verify that "easy-ubuntu" did not leave you with a totally corrupted /etc/apt/sources.list file. If it did, get a new one from source-o-matic: http://www.ubuntulinux.nl/source-o-matic . Then, #comment out all the stanzas in your xorg.conf file that refer to "wacom" unless, of course, you actually have a tablet PC. Don't forget the lines about cursor stylus and eraser in "Server layout". Then rerun "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable". Then come back and tell us how you did,

You'll be playing Frozen Bubble soon.

I have had some trouble here as well but the fix for me was adding a line under the driver line:

                      "Option" "NvAGP" "0" (zero)

This disables AGP but the system works just fine.

                      Good luck.

Then rerun "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable".  Then come back and tell us how you did,

You'll be playing Frozen Bubble soon.
I've installed the 2.6.15-23-k7 kernel and restricted modules.
I've just tried that, it didn't really seem to have any effect, but there weren't any errors I could see in /var/log/Xorg.0.log.old.
Is there a line I can put in the xorg.conf to tell it to ignore tv-out to make sure that isn't the problem?

Disabling the AGP wouldn't be that great because it is an AGP8X card

You should be looking for errors in the most recent xorg.log. A thought just occurred to me, I've been ignoring the possibilty that you might have a hardware problem because I've assumed that you were posting from windoze, but I'm stumped so I''ll ask. Does the card work under wiindoze?

Yes, the card works fine under winxp.
Also it works fine under 64bit Kubuntu on the same computer
My processor is an AMD64 3000+, does this men I shouldn't use the i386 kernel? I'm going to try i686 kernel and see if it works any better, I would use 64bit but I can't get the chroot right.
