I just tried upgrade from Kubuntu 6.06 LTS to the 6.10 release candidate. I changed all of my repo info from dapper to edgy. I typed sudo apt-get update and apt-get dist-upgrade into konsole. Apparently Xorg-dev and Xutil did not download properly as they came up as broken under the adept update manager. I tried attempting to rememdy this by marking them as install and trying to reinstall them. This did not work. I tried removing and reinstalling, which didn't work either. I tried removing X completely and then doing apt-get update and apt-get idst-upgrade again, but this just completely messed up my system. I can now only work from the terminal login, and apt-get gives me errors about X not being installed or something like that whenever I try to use it. Is there any way to reinstall kubuntu without destroying my home directory? Please help.

Re: attempted Edgy upgrade resulted in corrupted Xorg
Hi,
If you made a different partition for /home, you should have no troubles to reinstall, just not point directly to your /home partition, when you will have boot, go in console, add the corresponding line for your /home and mount it.
Another solution, should be to try to install xserver-xorg from the console. If it's installed remove it by this :
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xorg
and then reinstall it, it should also fix the system (I guess)
Hope it helps.

Re: attempted Edgy upgrade resulted in corrupted Xorg
I have the same problem. After reboot X didnt come up. It complaint about missing libraries (which are, even after apt-get etc never to be found). So now I am stuck with nothing more than a console.
I downloaded and burned the cd, but that was a MAJOR dissapointment. I expected, just like Suse has, a repair or an upgrade setting. But no. Only a complete reinstall is possible. And while I am working thourhg the install options, suddenly the partitions were changed. That should be done after I say install. NOT DURING the options :-(
To be honest, I am not sure what to do now. I am seriously thinking of reverting back to OpenSuse.
I hope someone can help me, by pointing out how I can make Kubuntu determine my X-settings automatically. Just like the live-cd does, but than for my hard drive.

Re: attempted Edgy upgrade resulted in corrupted Xorg
I got it fixed. I think that the repository server was under heavy stress when I upgraded. This resulted in not all files downloading. After a few days I did the apt-get dist-upgrade in console mode. This fixed it.
