    Xorg problems on initial installation

    Hey all,

Just downloaded and installed Kubuntu 6.06 Dapper Drake. Looks really cool so far, except for I've only just fixed a problem with xorg.conf which was supplied as default in the installation for some reason.

    Firstly, xorg.conf contains the following:

    Code:
    Section "InputDevice"
     Driver "wacom"
     Identifier "stylus"
Option "Device" "/dev/wacom" # Change to
                               # /dev/input/event
                               # for USB
     Option "Type" "stylus"
Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
     Driver "wacom"
     Identifier "eraser"
Option "Device" "/dev/wacom" # Change to
                               # /dev/input/event
                               # for USB
     Option "Type" "eraser"
Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
    EndSection

    Section "InputDevice"
     Driver "wacom"
     Identifier "cursor"
Option "Device" "/dev/wacom" # Change to
                               # /dev/input/event
                               # for USB
     Option "Type" "cursor"
Option "ForceDevice" "ISDV4" # Tablet PC ONLY
    EndSection
Not sure if they're supposed to be in there or not? They dont cause a problem other than errors in the xorg log file, so will leave that in there until someone replies to this.

The next thing though was a bigger problem. It had issues with my monitor that wasn't present in Breezy (or other distributions, as I could only fix this problem by downloading and running knoppix to get the right modelines). For hours I have been trying to get it to work at a resolution other than 640x480 (which is just selected as a default fail safe mode I believe). The installation routine did detect the monitor correctly with vert and horizontal sync/refresh rates set correctly for this monitor, but it never added any mode lines to the conf file and hence it couldnt set the video modes at all. I have fixed this by adding the following into the monitor section (I've included the whole monitor part of the file but I've only added the mode lines to get it to work).

    Code:
    Section "Monitor"
    	Identifier	"Q90U Dvi"
    	Option "DPMS"
    	HorizSync	31-67
    	VertRefresh	59-61

How is it knoppix can set those lines just fine, but kubuntu fails to do so? (Except for instance in Breezy which did work ok).

Anyway at least I've got it working at 1280x1024 now, just took a few hours of tweaking and fiddling etc. Perhaps this could be a fix for the next version of kubuntu?

It is safe to remove those lines (you have to remove the corresponding lines from "input devices" too or x11 refuses to start).
It must be a bug in Xserver ver. 7.0 (another one), I don't have such devices.
