Which kernel version do I need

I am using a Pentium IV with Hyperthreading, and was wondering what version of the kernel I should load? When looking thru the Adept package manager, I saw different Kernel versions and I was wondering if I should choose a different one?

    Thanks in advance.

    Hi,

linux-image-i686 should install smp support for PIV
    look at this :
    linux-image-686 - Linux kernel image on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/PIV
    linux-image-2.6.15-26-686 - Linux kernel image for version 2.6.15 on PPro/Celeron/PII/PIII/PIV SMP/UP

    Cheers

        About Feisty

        Maybe this helps:

Topic: Why is my version generic and not i386?
        http://kubuntuforums.net/forums/inde...opic=3080338.0

        Jucato gives link to:
Optimized kernel builds: the straight dope
        https://lists.ubuntu.com/archives/ub...st/019983.html

Having read over it, I think the numbers are fairly compelling. The
difference in performance between -386 and -686 is insigificant; the
measurements are all within a reasonable error range, and within that range,
-686 was slower as often as it was faster.

My recommendation is that we phase out these additional kernel builds, which
I expect will save us a great deal of developer time, buildd time, archive
        storage and bandwidth.
If you search linux-image-686. It tells:
        Obsoleted by: linux-image-generic
This package is for upgrades only.
        And
        linux-image-generic
        Generic Linux kernel image
This package will always depend on the latest generic kernel image
        available.

            It does not work!
If power off and immediately power on is ok. But if I poff and, after an hour, pon it does not work!
The system reboot when try to initialize the second processor >

The only one kernel that it works is the -386. But it sees an only one processor (ht=on).
The system is DELL Inspiron 8300 PIV 3GHz with HT. I have not never had problems with kernel -686 and dapper/breezy.
            Please, help me.
            Thanks in advance.

            Note n.1
It is much strange one: if boot from windows partition and reboot from linux partition the problem vanishes.
