Kubuntu hangs after nvidia driver install

I am running kubuntu and trying to install the drivers for my GeForce 5500, but after I have changed "nv" to "nvidia" in xorg.conf my system hangs at the kubuntu logo stage (ie splash screen before kde starts running!)
    please help

Did you install the linux-restricted-modules package for your kernel, in addition to nvidia-glx? And, did you run the command "sudo nvidia-glx-config enable"?

Re: Kubuntu hangs after nvidia driver install

You can always change the word "nvidia" back to "nv" in the /etc/X11/xorg.conf stanza beginning
        Code:
        Section "Device"
That should put you back to where you were before you made the change.

Another thing to do, before you switch back, is to compare your current xorg.conf file with the previous one that was saved by the nvidia-glx-enable command to see if there are any other changes besides "nv" to "nvidia".

ja, thanks that is indeed what I did. It is weird though because in ubuntu (gnome) I don't get that problem at all and I can run Xgl / Compiz etc... so for now I'll just stick to gnome until I work out what the problem is
          thanks for your help

There shouldn't be any difference between KDE and Gnome at the level of xerver-xorg. I'm puzzled.
