    Steam Not Loading

    Hello

    I went to install steam through synaptic.

    Did the update and it then says checking for updates, that screen then goes and nothing happens.

    Is there a command I can run so I can see what the problem is.

    I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed from their site.

          I have the latest Nvidia drivers installed from their site.
          Have you rebooted or logged out since the update?

          It is possible a kernel or some other update broke the Nvidia drivers. These have to be reinstalled after every kernel update, when installed from Nvidia's stuff, and not from the distro's provides packages. It is highly recommended to use the driver manager for this, as it is far far easier, does all the little extra steps, and updates itself when there are new kernels.

          On the other hand, it might be worth getting Steam directly from their website, if it is not a borked driver. Purge the existing steam (sudo apt purge steam), and double click the package you downloaded from their website.

            I have rebooted.

            One thing, does the Driver Manager automatically update to the new Version of Nvidia Driver when it comes out Right I will try the purge

            The file does not seem to exist anymore on the link

                And no, you do not get updates to the driver installing them from downloads directly from Nvidia, you have to perform the install process for each new driver, after fully removing what you already installed. You also have to reinstall the current driver after every kernel update, after fully removing the existing one, I believe. The install process actually involves compiling code that allows the proprietary driver's binary blob to interface with the specific kernel you run. Using the distro-provided drivers does this automatically, and also redoes it when there is a kernel update, automatically.

                Using the Driver Manager in System Settings makes it even easier, as it scans your system for available drivers, and offers choices, if any, and just a few clicks get it done.

                I do not know what is causing steam to not run, but it might be outdated libraries as provided by the steam package in the repos, which is why I suggested to grab it directly from Steam. I have 3 systems with steam installed, and do not have any problems so I can't reproduce this. There are many reports, most (but not all) are old, and I did not quickly see a cause, which would lead to a proper solution.

                  Thanks so much, I had a clean install on another partition and it installed and ran ok. I had no done any updates or installed the NVIDIA drivers or new Kernel.
