    recommend a soundcard

Looks like the on board sound on our old i7-4770 PC is dead. Rather than trying to locate a vintage lga 1150 board, I was thinking of getting a sound card.

Any card that won't break the bank and is well supported by the 16.04 kernels (4.4 and up?)

Oops. You said "sound card" and I read "video card" ...

Search Amazon & search for Linux in the reviews.

I've only used 1 internal dedicated sound card that came with my my Maximus Formula II motherboard & 2 USB sound cards, all have worked in Linux.

I usually let my GPU handle sound with HDMI

if you can find "a PHYSICAL card" Linux will support it.

place it as the TOP card in the PHYSICAL machine.

Yupp. Any old sounblaster or souundblaster-compatible card from a garage sale or eBay (likely under $10) will work just fine.
