    Kubuntu 14.10 and Plasma 5

If I use ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next to upgrade KDE to Plasma 5, will I be able to revert it back to 4.14.x if anything goes wrong?

    #2
I have read but not tried this

    sudo apt-get install ppa-purge

    sudo apt-get remove kubuntu-plasma5-desktop

    sudo ppa-purge ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next

(Perhaps google ppa-purge to see what comes up)

I used the ppa but decided to do a clean install of 14.10 and try plasma5 from a bootable usb for the time being.

This page tells you how to uninstall plasma 5 if you don't like it.

I have not tried reverting from the 'next' ppa. I did try reverting from one of the 'neon' ppas at one point, and it wasn't pretty. It was a virtual machine, so I finally gave up and deleted it.

I like Plasma5, but it isn't going on my need-it-for-work Utopic install for a while yet.

Hi, thank you guys for your answers. And yeah, I like Plasma 5 but I'm a little afraid to break my system beyond repair. Maybe I should just wait a bit more...

Made the HUGE mistake of installing this ppa. Lost pretty much all of system settings (there are only a hand full of things in there now). No way of modifying any network settings (task bar widget gone) and now in the process of trying to revert have blow away all of my desktop settings and still don't have anything in the system settings to make things work. Really really wish I hadn't done this. Going to have to totally re-install by the looks to get things working again.

Yes, I know, use at own risk, beta software etc. etc.. BUT.. can't believe SO much is broken.

Yeah - not to kick you when you're down - but I wouldn't ever experiment with the install I use to do things. You only need like 8-10 GB to do a basic install so why not partition and install a separate, sacrificial Kubuntu there and play around? Then you can break it to your hearts content, wipe, re-install and do it all again. Heck, make three 10GB partitions and install all over the place

Another option is to use a VirtualBox install to play with.

I'm really sorry to hear that. I was willing to try it, to see if it would fix this issue.

In this case, have a separated partition for home would also work?

Well, a separate /home would work but if it's a sacrificial install, why bother? If you're experimenting with the intent of moving to the experimental install eventually, then use a larger partition, say 16-20GB, so there's room for more applications down the road. You can use a separate /home or not - it can always be moved later if desired.

Well... given that it was broken anyway. I decided to install the full KDE5 setup (added the next ppa). Currently running reasonably well (a few issues with booting by the looks, but eventually got it going). Lets see how long this lasts. Time to backup everything

What do you mean by "full KDE5 setup"? Didn't the ppa already had installed everything an "average user" running KDE 4.14.x would possibly need?

No, the ppa didn't. It broke so badly that massive chunks were missing.

On another note... how do you restart plasma5 when it crashes? Just had that happen, black screen. No 4 you just did plasma-desktop and it would come back.. what's the equivalent on 5? Any ideas?

So, how did you "fully installed Plasma 5"?
I don't know how to restart Plasma 5. I thought it was like KDE 4:
                          Code:
                          kquitapp plasma-desktop && plasma-desktop

in krunner, you type kquitapp5 plasmashell to stop it, and simply
                            plasmashell to start it

If one upgrade to Plamas 5 using ppa:kubuntu-ppa/next, is it recommendable to disable kubuntu-backports, kubuntu-ppa and kubuntu-proposed?
