System Settings - Display & Monitor not working

    Hi,

If I want to launch my "Display & Monitor" settings from "System Settings". The "System Settings" window just closes down upon clicking on the icon. Why may that be and how can I go about troubleshooting this?

    Thank you,
    Ron

What type of video card do you use and did you install any drivers for it?
All up to date, Nvidia GT520 and yes, Nvidia drivers are installed. I can change my screen settings in the Nvidia driver but the KDE interface (in System Settings) should let me as well, shouldn't it?

If you have nVidia drivers installed, use nvidia-settings instead. It offers more options the KDE ever will.

The Systems settings are mainly for use with the Open Source driver(s) like Nouveau or Intel.
For several years the nVidia tool has offered more options, not really a surprise as it is Closed Source and they're not giving away all their tech.

So were you able to install one of the later drivers like 331.38?
I'm using 304.88 - would you recommend to upgrade?

This card is only around 3 years old and I'm fairly sure it is supported in the latest driver.
Okay, I downloaded the latest(331.49), tried to install but failed. I compiled the kernel module and at the end of the installation it says that it went succesful but on bootup it says version mismatch, it still finds the old version - so I tried to revert back to 304.88 bu that failed as well, here it can't build the kernel module, so I'm lefy on the console now.
          Okay, trying 331.49 again:
          LICENSE question - Accept
There apppears to already be a driver (304.88), overwrite & continue? - Yes
The distribution-provided pre-install script failed! Continue? - Yes
Would you like to register DKMS? - Yes (also tried No here, no difference in the end)
Install 32-bit compatible libraries? - No (had selected Yes previously)
now it's downloaaading and installing DKMS
          Run xxvidia-xconfig ? - Yes
Your X config file has been updated succesfully! Installation of 331.49 is now complete - OK
          back to shell:
          "# service lightdm start"
Just shows a black screen with a blinking cursor in the top left...
How do I go about fixing this?
          Thanks!

Are you attempting to install the binary drivers downloaded from nvidia?

Almost no one on this forum does that any more because it's easier and safer to use the drivers from Ubuntu. You might want to post over at the nVidia forums for help with those drivers. They're not packaged the same as Ubuntu's so you might not get the help you need here.

Well, okay, I'd also be satisfied with the Ubuntu drivers - so you recommend to uinstall them I see, any specific hints on getting this done? Specific sources?

Sources should already be there. You might have to enable Multiverse in Muon (I'm not at a linux box at the moment). Anyway; install and launch Jockey. It will help you select driver versions and activate them.

In order to use nVidia drivers, you must have kernel headers and dkms installed, but you already should since you had the older ones working at one point.

Since you're already having problems, I recommend not using xorg.conf yet (just rename it). Once you have the new drives installed, then use nVidia-settings to configure your monitors and save the results. A quick glance at your xorg.conf and it looks like an older one so you might have a few conflicting things in there that you don't need any longer.

                      Well, I can use jockey-text.
I have tried to enable the nvidia_304 driver that shows up with -list with
                      jockey-text -e kmod:nvidia_304
and then I did a startx but that didn't get me back to X either...

                        Okay,

I did a 'dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg", then rebooted and now, I at least get a graphical login window but KDE never starts, entering my password just throws me ack to the login age... how can I proceed from here? I'm sure I'm entering the right password!

                          I also tried
Xorg -configure but that didn't get me much further
Now I installed nouveau and set the drivers in my xorg.con to nouveau instead of vesa or nvidia (what I had tried before) but I get the same: graphical login but no KDE workspace upon login (login just brings me back to the login promp page)

                            Now,

I have a secondary user on my machine and I just realized that it lets me logon to that account (in KDE) but my account sstill doesn't work, so I thought permissions might be messed up in my account so I did a "sudo chown -R reg:reg /home/reg/" but that didn't change things either.... any other hints? This must be fixable somehow...

You've got too many simultaneous issues going on. If you secondary account allows log in obviously there's something wrong in your user account. Generally, deleting (renaming) the ~/.kde folder fixes most things. You should be looking through your log files for error messages - /var/log and ~/.xsession-errors at least.

You could also kill the display manager (lightdm unless you changed it to kdm) and attempt to start X from the command line after logging in as your user. This should show error messages in the console that might shed light on the source of the problem.

It's going to be difficult to trouble-shoot driver issues if you can't log into your account.
