Are you running nouveau or nvidia drivers? My Kubuntu doesn't freeze, but Gnome and Ubuntu will under certain conditions. If I install nvidia then nothing freezes. It will always freeze when using System Settings under nouveau.

teh_heretik: my PC is just an HP that I got on sale in the early days of Core i7 processors. It came with Vista which I didn't mind, but when the original video card quit, I replaced it with the one I have now. Because of Microsoft's funky OS hardware rules, I lost authentication to the OS. I got ticked off, so I found and installed an illegal copy of Windows 7 which I used until this past January when I bought Windows 8 on Microsoft's $40 promo so I could have a legal copy of Windows. A person might think that as long as I have been dual booting Windows and Linux, I could forget Windows, but I still haven't passed that confidence threshhold.

I don't say enough often enough, but I sure do rely a lot on the information shared in this forum and before this the Mint and Mepis forums.

verndog: Yes, I am using the Nvidia 319.60 driver.

I got to my desk a few minutes before 9 this morning and my PC is alive and well. I left my usual assortment of programs running last night except for Skype, which I ordinarily leave running all the time. I made a copy of the top results just in case. I'm going to consider the problem mysteriously resolved with causes unknown and cure unknown. I want to thank every one for your efforts to help me to help myself fix this problem.

I could not agree more. It is almost exponential that one learns from another user, passes that on across multiple channels sometimes directly or indirectly thanks to Google bots and is picked up by multiple users who then pass that on and so on. It all starts with the excellent help that is given on forums like this one. I am pleasantly surprised by the number of users with practical and at times technical knowledge and skills that they share to resolve problems. And the framework for all this is Open Source. How much better is this than having to call a support number from a corporate entity to get help. The question answers itself.
Linux because it works. No social or political motives in my decision to use it.

Glad the issue is resolved. I might be curious (you may not) in determining if it was in fact an OpenGL 2.0 plus Native vs. OpenGL 3.1 plus Raster issue, as that is the only change made. But regardless, you issue is resolved, and that's what counts. If you feel the same, mark this thread Solved please.

To satisfy us both, I'll reset to OpenGL 2.0 for tonight and leave top open in the terminal to monitor the system and we'll see what happens.

I searched this morning and couldn't find how to mark a thread Solved. If you would be so kind as to point me in the right direction, I would be greatful. I know the answer is in here somewhere, but I don't seem able to find it.

Once again, my system is still up and running, so I'll set OpenGL back to 3.1 and mark this thread Solved. Thanks for your help SH and everyone else who lended a hand.
