After updating my Gateway LT31 last weekend (3/15/13) I have discovered 3 back-breaking issues: 1- All "applications" entries under the Kickoff (K) Launcher have disappeared! When I use the search button, it only brings up "Run". The Favorites are still there as are Recent and Computer---however the Konsole is missing. 2- In Kmail, clicking on a link only brings up a window asking what file or program to open the link with, and then opens up the file system and that goes nowhere. 3- Trying to open a file like a .txt or .pdf brings up the same window asking what program or service to use. If I put in Kate or Okular, for example, it does open the file, but it seems that all associations of programs and files is screwed up. This really has me confused as how to undo the damage short of reinstalling Kubuntu 12.10 or changing distros, Anyone have an idea?

still confused
Thanks, Vinny.
Requesting the cat you mentioned above yielded no response
There are no PPA's added to software resources; I have never opened with this machine any gui app with sudo or kdesudo; and no changes have been made to file associations

Vinny, I ran that again It produced a log list of all the packages in the update and stated on every one that it was only half installed and half-configured. I have tried to paste the output, but the forum comes back and tells I must have 3 more posts before I can send links. I have no idea that why that happened.
looks like it will be easier just to reinstall Kubuntu
