    Personal Contacts missing.

    Hi folks,

I have a horrible feeling that I've lost all of my personal contacts in the move to 12.10.

I backed up my entire home directory, but when I look in .local/share I don't have a contacts directory, so the 12.04 setup must have been storing them somewhere else.

Any ideas? There is an akonadi directory with some databases in it, but if that's it, how do I get them into the new setup?

    Thanks.

    Peter.

kde stores its settings in ~/.kde/share/config and application data in ~/.kde/share/apps. However, kontact might store your contacts in the akonadi database...

To restore the old settings just copy them over to where they should be and restart any required application. You may need to stop the application first or even copy the settings across while you don't have a gui running.

      Kontact Files

      Hi Peter

On my system, I have contacts in the directory ~/.kde/apps/kabc. I also have various bits of information stored in "Popup Notes", these are stored in .kde/apps/knotes. My Calendar is stored in .kde/apps/korganizer. On a new installation, I copy these files from my previous system into the new .kde/apps/ directory. I then have to use Kontact, and in the case of "contacts" I right click on the existing address book and select "Add Address Book Folder...." followed by "VCard Directory". After this I navigate to the directory .kde/apps/kabc.

I hope this is not too different to how your system is organized.

I know that there are a lot of informations, but they are very usefull for all.

Thanks for the information NoWorries and pavbaranov. NoWorries, this is where the old kmail used to store its contacts etc, but will be different with kmail2 (see the links pavbaranov provided). Unfortunately I had already upgraded to kmail2 some time ago and though I was storing my contacts in ~/.local/share/contacts (as the system now seems to be doing), but when I went to my backup it is not even on the system, so it seems I've been inadvertently storing the contacts somewhere else (probably not backed up).

The akonadi databases are backed up, so I suspect the contacts are probably in there somewhere, but it looks to be a bit beyond my ability to get them back from there. I will drag out an old backup from somewhere and see if I can reload them from the old .vcf files. They will be a little out of date, but not too bad really as I'm keeping most of them in google now anyway (but is a lesson in ensuring you have what you think you have in a backup before blowing away a system).

          Peter.

Individual (one per person) vcf files in ~/.local/share/contacts is the default storage for new installations of kmail2, but if your previous installation was migrated from kmail1, it's possible it was still using the old std.vcf file in ~/.kde/apps/kabc, especially if your backup doesn't have ~/.local/share/contacts. It's worth checking, anyway.

Akonadi databases are just sort of caches for the data, the "raw" data is still stored somewhere either locally or remotely (if you're using remote storage) in a more conventional form. You could also check your backup for your akonadi resource config files (the contact resources), as these probably include the path to the data files.
