I broke apt... help?

    I broke apt... help?

    So, yeah. I broke it alright. Any application the uses it crashes and it says segmentation fault.

    I tries cleaning the cache, checking sources and re-installing libapt. Any other suggestions?

    with out a real error we can only guess , try first using sudo apt-get -f install (no package after ) if that don't work try sudo dpkg --configure -a . post the real error you get and we might be able to help more then if these don't work .

      My bad. Here is what I can post, since I can't post links.
      When I start muon, I get a crash report it crashes when it open a string from libapt segmentation fault.

      Both sudo dpkg --configure -a and apt-get install -f brings me to the promt again. No output.

      I would like to learn to fix my own problems, but research and asking on google+ communities reaped no solutions. Its still a fairly fresh install. And a 64bit system.

      I installed these packages.

      $ sudo apt-get install autoconf2.13 bison bzip2 ccache curl flex gawk gcc g++ g++-multilib git ia32-libs lib32ncurses5-dev lib32z1-dev libgl1-mesa-dev libx11-dev make zip

      So, the 32bit libraries are for target building. Not so much for OS use.

        if you were able to install all that with apt-get and received no errors ,,,,,,,, apt is NOT broken .

        now that dose not mean that something is not wrong with whatever application you were using (you never did say which one/ones) .

          I installed those before it started acting up. After they finished, I turned off the computer for the night, because it was late. The next day, boom!

            Aaa OK then try to install something with apt-get and see if you get an error ,,,, if so write it down and post it .

                    sources list looks right , backtrace is gibberish to me ,,,,the link you posted under edit did save some time and it seems dpkg is still working .........Humm lets see the output of

                    we are using tail to get just the last 150 lines it may be much more ,,,,,you can post it to evernote if you wish & we may need to go back further .
