.dia file association problem

Whenever I click on a .dia file without specifying "open with Dia", KDE tries to open it with a web browser even though I have deleted every entry other than Dia from x-dia-diagram in System Settings.

Previously, it was trying to open .dia files in Rekonq and seemed to be getting lost in an infinite loop. Finally I uninstalled Rekonq and then it began trying to open these files in Firefox. After I deleted all the browsers and other application associations from x-dia-diagram in System Settings (leaving only a single entry for Dia), it now opens the files in Dia, but at the same time tries to open them in Firefox too.

I don't see anything relating to .dia files in Firefox about:config. Where else can it be getting this association?

In dolphin right click the file > properties > general tab > click the spanner icon on the left of the file type and see what it lists there. That should confirm if you have edited the right rule or if kde is looking at the wrong one.
