    Yes it is there, or rather there are two seemingly identical.

    So, I'll take your advice, and wait for confirmation. :-)

      One is for the 32 bit system and the one I indicated is for your 64 bit system. Let's hope I am right.

        This package -- linux-backports-modules-hv-precise-virtual -- contains backported kernel modules to allow Precise's kernel to be used in a virtual machine running on Windows Server with Hyper-V. This is not going to be useful here.

        Let's first check the configuration state of all installed kernel packages. Please show the output of:
        Code:
        dpkg -l | egrep 'linux-image|linux-headers'

            The "iF" at the start of the line that lists 3.2.0-40 indicates that the package is installed but only half-configured. First, purge it:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get purge linux-image-3.2.0-40-generic
            Reboot your computer to ensure that normal behavior returns.

            Then try to upgrade again:
            Code:
            sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get dist-upgrade

              Sorry, that did not change anything. I'm still at 3.2.0-39-generic,

              The last line is still:

              and I get the same error messages as posted above when I try updating:

                We have to get that incorrectly configured package off your computer. Try this:
                Code:
                sudo dpkg --force-all --purge linux-image-3.2.0-40-generic

                    There's a hint in that output:
                    Code:
                    /usr/sbin/grub-mkconfig: 9: /etc/default/grub: Syntax error: EOF in backquote substitution
                    Let me take a look at the file /etc/default/grub, please.

                      There is a new kernel upgrade today. Did you get it? Maybe that will solve the problem.

                        Here is the grub file attached.

                        And then I upgraded to the new kernel, and got the following error warning:

                        Code:
                        Pakke: linux-image-3.2.0-40-generic

                        Google translate:

                        Feil: subprocess installed post-installation script returned error exit status 2

                        (Pakke = package. Feil = error)

                          The problem is in line 2. See it?

                          Code:
                          GRUB_TIMEOUT="61"
                          GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR="`lsb_release"
                          GRUB_HIDDEN_TIMEOUT_QUIET="true"
                          GRUB_DEFAULT="saved"
                          GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX_DEFAULT="quiet splash"
                          GRUB_CMDLINE_LINUX=''
                          GRUB_BACKGROUND="/home/nils/Skrivebord/Maler"

                          GRUB_SAVEDEFAULT="true"
                          You have a single backquote in there, which is causing the post-installation script in the package to fail.

                          That line should be:
                          Code:
                          GRUB_DISTRIBUTOR=`lsb_release -i -s 2> /dev/null || echo Debian`
                          Fix that, then run
                          Code:
                          sudo update-grub
                          Now you should be able to install the latest kernel. BTW, I'd recommend getting rid of all the older ones...you have a lot!

                                But why does it not upgrade to 3.2.0-41?

                                I have the headers for 3.2.0-41 in /usr/src

                                but no init.img and vmlinuz for xxx-41
